About us
The Foundation of Spinal Cord Injuries (FLM)’s main objective is to “achieve the greatest possible level of life normalization for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in order to reach their full re-integration into society through ‘integral rehabilitation’ “.
Hospital stays hardly ever achieve full integral rehabilitation, as the main focus is the restoration the patient’s physical health. As a result, following their release from the hospital, it becomes necessary to provide these patients (and their families) with the kind of support and resources that will allow them to fully recover and achieve a satisfactory quality of life.
In the absence of an integral rehabilitation approach applied to the patient as well as his/her physical and psychological environment, full integration in society becomes seriously constrained beyond the inherit mobility issues of SCI. Patients often find themselves living in environments which do not meet their special needs, and usually lack the necessary physical, medical, psychological, social and cultural support which among other things, would help them with their daily life issues and prevent such side effects as: urological complications, pressure sores, spasticity, etc.
Integral rehabilitation strives to achieve specific objectives aimed at allowing the SCI patient to reach his/her full incorporation in the working world, as well as to maximize the level of integration in the surrounding physical and social environment.
Specific Objectives for SCI patients:
- Physical rehabilitation;
- Improving functional capacity through occupational therapy activities;
- Strengthening the patients’ mental health (together with his/her spouse/partner and relatives) through individual and/or group therapy;
- Improving prospects for integration into the working world;
- Supporting the process of overcoming the special challenges associated with this condition;
- Providing appropriate residential facilities when necessary;
- Developing potential new skills through artistic and audiovisual workshops;
- Making accessible the use of new information technologies; and
- Promoting leisure and spare time activities.
